Why is your child’s mental health so important?

  • Helping children to be mentally healthy is a major part of caring for kids.
  • Mental health affects children’s behaviour, feelings, ability to learn, social relationships, as well as their physical health and wellbeing.
  • Good mental health in childhood lays the foundations for positive mental health and wellbeing, now and into the future

  • About half of all serious mental health problems in adulthood begin before the age of 14
  • In Australia approximately 1 in 7 children experience mental health difficulties.
  • Counselling works; there are proven and effective treatments that work for the vast majority of children and adolescents with a range of mental health problems.

Benefits of Counselling for Children and Teens

Our child and adolescent psychologists can help you and your child to learn about why they are having problems and how they can deal with them.

They offer practical solutions and strategies with the focus being on helping your child become happy and resilient. These can include learning to:

  • Use healthy problem-solving and coping skills
  • Change negative thinking patterns
  • Distinguish between different emotions
  • Use more appropriate ways of expressing feelings
  • Identify situations that can make symptoms worse
  • Use other skills that can either prevent symptoms or help cope with them.

Benefits of Education & Coaching for Parents

Parenting is not instinctive or automatic – effective parenting is learned.

Where possible most child and adolescent psychologists work closely with parents because they play a key role in initiating and generating behaviour change in their children.

A child and adolescent psychologist can you with strategies to deal with frustrating parenting struggles like:

  • Morning routines
  • Bedtime and sleep issues
  • Back talk
  • Not listening
  • Power struggles
  • Sibling rivalry
  • Over entitlement
  • Tantrums
  • Whining ………and much more

When is it time to see a Child Psychologist?

A question that many parents struggle to answer is “is my child’s behaviour serious enough to seek professional help?”

Some children are in ‘therapy’ for simple and common issues that are best dealt with by parents. The fact is that children and adolescents go through huge amounts of change that effect their thinking and behaviour.

It’s not unusual for them to experience worry, mood swings, a lack of energy or motivation, rebelling against authority, a lack of concern with personal appearance and hygiene, an obsession with food, and experimentation with alcohol and drugs. Most parents can, and should, attempt to help their child cope with problems before consulting a child psychologist.

There are, of course, situations where outside help is warranted.

Consider whether your child’s problems are:

  • Intense
  • Persist over long periods of time
  • Inappropriate for the child’s age, and
  • Interfering with life.

As a general guide, your child may need, or benefit from seeing a child psychologist if:

  • Your child’s behaviour interfering with his/her daily life, or the family’s functioning
  • You, as a parent, are stuck and don’t know what to do
  • You and your partner disagree on how to handle your child’s problems and this is putting a strain on your relationship
  • Your other children unhappy, frightened or upset by a sibling’s behaviour, or a parent’s response to that behaviour

Trust your instincts. If you think you or your child would benefit from talking to a child psychologist, then make contact. Most likely, it will be the right decision.
